Bullying
Bullying is a known term in our society, it describes the act of forcing someone to do something. We as parents get angry when our little ones return home from school and tell us that they were treated them badly by their peers. But what is the reason for this bullying and how can we influence the life of the bully in a positive way.
I interviewed Bull the bulldog from ”The Rocky Series” and asked him about his past experiences. I gathered some information from the bully’s point of view this time, because I feel we hear from the victims a lot and the actual problem is- the bully.
What is the typical bully behavior?
I used to get up in the mornings and think who can I make miserable today?
We would use techniques like insults, threats and my job was always to spread the rumors. We usually went as a group, and before we approach the person, we will discuss the attack and strategy we want to use.
Why do animals bully?
My main reason for bullying was because I was bullied as a puppy. It also gave me a feeling of power over others. It is still not easy to admit, but I was jealous of those who were happy and enjoyed life. I wanted to be like that. I always believed my dark past wouldn’t allow me a bright future, I was wrong!
Any advice for animals that are being bullied?
If someone approached me with a confident fearless attitude I was immediately thrown off, somewhat like you did Rocky! (Giggles). Also always keep eye contact when speaking to the bully. Use neutral come backs, for instance you can respond with whatever you say.
Never look scared.
I cannot emphasize this enough because being scared is the exact reactions the bully wants and if he doesn’t get that, it means he gets no reward. When you see that someone is being bullied, immediately step in or get help, go get an older animal but don’t just ignore the situation.
How can we help the bullies?
If you are closely involved with a bully, it is your responsibility to help that animal or to help him/her get professional help. You can start by introducing the animal to more positive things in everyday life, for example show him/her how you help others, do good deeds and give compliments. Such behavior will inspire them. Even the simple act of smiling at someone and for them to receive a smile back can do wonders. Try to remind the bully that it is his/her own choice to behave that way and that they are fully responsible for such behavior. Know the difference between judging the bully and setting moral standards.
The animal is not the problem rather the act performed by the animal.
Bullying is just a bad habit and it is important to address the cause of such behavior early on. Bullies can change. It will take hard work and determination but they can change.
I hope this article gave you insight on the behaviors of bullies. Bullying is a real issue we ignore too often. Take the responsibility and raise your puppies, so they know right from wrong. Don’t waste your energy on judging a bully rather help them in finding the solution. If we work together, we are much stronger, so lend a hand.
Start today and make a difference!
